Acres

A small tree with a wide range of styles and shapes of maple type leaves. These plants have a wide range of leaf colour changes through the year, prefer to be grown in dappled shade but can be grown in pots or in the ground.

Oaktree Nursery has possibly the UK's widest selection of specimen acers and maples available to the public and the landscaper trade at discounted prices. Our expert plant growers are at hand to give professional advice and growing tips.

The term Japanese Acer refers to a large group of very ornamental shrubs and small trees named Acer Palmatum, Japonicum and Shirasawanum. Most are bushy or shaped like small trees, however, those with Dissectum in the name have finely divided leaves and mostly grow into spreading mushroom shaped bushes.

Ferns

Ferns a group of shade loving plants can be used to fill gloomy corners of the garden with structure or a naturalistic look. Within ferns, there are varieties which can be grown in dry soils or damp soils. A good way of making an impact is to create a fernery with old tree stumps.

Most gardens have a north facing or shady area somewhere which is ideal for ferns. They provide a fresh, cool green effect and may be mixed in with other shade loving plants such as Hosta's. Providing they remain in shade or semi shade they make good container plants too.

Contrary to general opinion ferns do not require acid soil. They are perennial plants which over many years develop into big clumps bearing beautiful fronds. In winter some varieties die right down and at the first sign of warmer weather spring back into life. Other varieties remain green all winter with the fronds dying back when the new fronds develop in the spring.

All varieties we stock as hardy are completely hardy in the UK with many of them being native British species. All our ferns are pot grown and will transfer easily into the planting position because the root system can be left undisturbed.

Perennials

Oaktree Garden Centre and Nursery has one of the countries largest selections of perennials for sale in one location grown of their 27 acre nursery. A perennial plant or perennial is a plant that lives for more than two years. (As opposed to annual, biennial or bedding plants which only live one year). Here we are misusing the term to describe only herbaceous perennials. More correctly, woody plants like shrubs and trees are also perennials but for convenience we list them separately.

Perennials, especially small flowering plants, grow and bloom over the spring and summer and then die back every autumn and winter, then return in the spring from their root-stock rather than seeding themselves. These are known as herbaceous perennials. However, depending on the rigours of local climate, a plant that is a perennial in its native habitat, or in a milder garden, may be treated by a gardener as an annual and planted out every year, from seed, from cuttings or from divisions.

Potted Bulbs

Spring and summer bulbs give a high impact of colour through a short period of time before dying off and reappearing the following year, can be planted in mass to give a spectacular colour scheme or in gaps in borders to create pockets of flowers. You can also plant them in lawns for a naturalising effect.
